How to Open a .JXL File
Got a .jxl file that won't open? Drop it below to view it instantly — right in your browser, nothing uploaded — or read how to open JPEG XL on every device.
The fastest way: open it right here
The viewer above decodes your .jxl file on your own device and shows it in a second — no software to install, no account, and the file is never uploaded to any server (you can verify it in your browser's Network tab). If you need it in a normal format, one click saves it as JPG or PNG.
How to open a .jxl file on each device
Windows 10 / 11
Windows doesn't open .jxl out of the box. You can install a JPEG XL extension or an app like XnView/IrfanView — or just use the viewer above, no install needed.
Mac
Recent macOS (Sonoma) and Safari can preview many .jxl files. If yours still won't open or you're on an older Mac, use the viewer above.
iPhone & iPad
Sometimes Photos/Files can preview .jxl; when it can't, open this page in Safari and drop the file in — it opens on-device.
Android
Most Android phones can't open .jxl yet. Open this page in Chrome and select your file — it opens instantly, nothing installed.
Chrome / Edge / Firefox
Browsers are only now re-adding native JPEG XL support (Chrome is rolling it out). Until then, this viewer fills the gap on any browser.
Photoshop / GIMP
GIMP and some editors support .jxl via a plugin. To edit anywhere, convert it to PNG first with our JXL to PNG converter.
Why won't my .jxl file open?
A .jxl file is a JPEG XL image — a modern format that makes files smaller at the same quality. It's perfectly valid; the problem is that most browsers, phones and apps simply haven't turned on support for it yet. Google removed JPEG XL from Chrome in 2022 and is bringing it back in 2026, so native support is improving — but until it's everywhere, the reliable fix is to view it with a JPEG XL viewer or convert it.
